DIY Snowflake Ballerina Ornament

If you haven't checked out Ra Ra's amazing Pinterest page you should definitely do so ASAP! Amongst all the inspiring eye candy you will find a Christmas category with tons of fabulous decorating ideas. I used one of the pinned ornaments as inspiration for the post I'm sharing with you today.

Here is what you need to get started:

  • Home printer
  • Recycled book pages
  • Leafing size
  • Silver foil
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Needle & Thread

First up I created my template which I will share with you today so you can make your own. Just copy and paste the ballerina and snowflake images below and resize them if desired:

I printed my templates on plain white paper and cut them out as below.

The project that inspired this post was made out of plain white paper but I decided to make mine out of recycled book pages and add a bit of silver foil. First up I ripped out the page I wanted to use and then with a paintbrush I made some messy strokes across the page with Mont Marte leafing size. I kept it patchy so the foil didn't cover the whole page.

I then ripped out one sheet of silver foil with one layer of tissue (there is a layer of tissue  that divides all of the foil sheets) and placed it on top of the book page while applying light pressure. It took about 2 1/2 sheets of silver foil to cover the page. You can use scissors to cut the sheet of silver foil to fit the paper.

Then I lifted up the foil sheets and used my finger to rub off the excess foil.

Next, place your templates on the page and carefully trace around them. If you have trouble keeping it in place use a small amount of blue tac to hold it.

Once that is done, cut them both out.

You might consider applying leafing size and silver foil to the back of the ballerina as well. It isn't required for the snowflake skirt.

Here is a look at the snowflake once it is cut out:

To attach the snowflake skirt, simply wrap it around the ballerina's waist and you will see there is a small triangle of overlap. You could use double sided tape, glue, or put in a small stitch to secure it which is what I did.

I also used the needle and thread to place a loop at the top of the ballerina's head.

Here is what it looked like when it was finished:

If you don't want to use the silver foil (which can be a bit tricky to work with), you could consider sponging on a bit of metallic paint in silver, gold or bronze.

Another idea would be making it with nice handmade papers, vintage Christmas cards, or holiday wrapping paper (which would need to be strengthened with card stock) and eliminate using any foil or paint.

You could even cut the snowflake skirt out of a paper doily...or cut it out of lace and strengthen it with fabric stiffener.

So many options! What other ideas can you come up with?
