The Manic Pixie Dream Girl Obsession

After hearing my big sis discussing how many of her friends think she's the free spirit in the group .... when I think she's practically boring (hah! just kidding she's pretty rad)... I loudly declared 'Yeh but sometimes I wish I was more insane than I actually am... like sometimes I wish I had more quirks. People like that are just soooo more interesting!'

Probably something strange to declare seeing some would say my ability to lock my keys in the car, sing in public, be moody as hell for no reason and wear clothes that should STAY at the bottom-of-that-pile-in-Vinnies is enough wacky for one person. However after discovering the term 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' I know where I got it from. A film critic coined the term after watching 'Elizabethtown' (which I definitely watched and re-watched during my Orlando Bloom obsession stage).

Once you think about it these female characters are popping up everywhere, especially in those indie, coming-of-age films we so so love! She's there to teach the brooding lead male about enjoying the little things in life, she says silly things, listens to great music, is more than a bit mental, smart mouthed and most often are petite, adorably cute and quirkily dressed. And they are always accompanied by one of those sensitive but-not-really-happy writer-type guys who fall hopelessly in love with them. Until (in most cases) they are driven completely nuts by them....

Think Zooey Deschanel in pretty much everything. Think Annie Hall. Think Natalie Portman in 'Garden State'.

Think Kate in 'Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind'. And the other Kate in 'Almost Famous'.

The list goes on..... Which brings me to new film 'Ruby Sparks', which plays off this whole phenomena. I don't want to give too much away but lets's just say Calvin is a struggling, lonely writer who's dream girl comes to life... to comic and dramatic effect. See it! You just have to!

Love them or hate them the MPDG is definitely a style icon! A lil snippet of Zooey in 500 Days of Summer, for example:

So here's a few Ra Ra looks to inspire you. Think girly and vintage with your own unique twist!
