Bringing back the book club July 22 2012, 0 Comments
My idea of a good night out includes wonderful company, stimulating conversation, a crisp glass of wine and something delicious to nibble on. Sounds pretty great right? That's why I'm bringing back the book club with my girl friends and I think you should try it too. All you need is a group of 5 to 10 lovely ladies (or men, I just prefer to keep it to X chromosomes only) who enjoy reading and can spare one night a month.
Perhaps one of you has a cute balcony space that would be perfect for the little soiree, or maybe you alternate each month. Once you have the location down pat, compile a list of books you want to tackle together. They might be specifically new best sellers, crime novels or just the classics (think Jane Austen Book Club or the like). I love the idea of re-reading old favourites like Wuthering Heights, Persuasion and The Great Gatsby so I vote for a vintage theme. These titles evoke very specific emotions and thoughts for me, so I think it would be interesting to see what other people got from them.
Now lock in a time and date for your first meeting (eg. first Friday of the month) and get reading! Maybe you could take notes of ideas you would like to share with the group along the way or maybe you just power through and let the conversation roll organically. The point is bringing people together, doing something out of the ordinary, enjoying a good laugh and maybe even learning a thing or two.
Another idea I have heard of if you don't like reading is a film club. It could be 80s teen-themed or perhaps you all really love horrors. Any theme that gets people talking and debating is a good one.
