Some days are made for journeying through vintage treasures, snacking on delicious foods, and getting lost in whimsical nooks. Paddington is all about these days, and so are we! To help you along with planning out your ultimate day, we have compiled a list of our Ten Places to Visit in Paddington.
Atticus Finch Cafe - 83 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington
"Good coffee, good food, good company, good times."
For complete enjoyment, I'd recommend bringing along a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird. Couldn't hurt, could it?
Francesca's Flowers: Cafe Florist - 46 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington
"Francesca's flowers is a florist in Paddington with a relaxing tea room specialising in exquisite teas. For the caffeine addicted we have awesome coffee."
Your eyes are in for a treat as much as your taste buds are! This is the place to forget about your worries for a while. If you'd like to get crafty and want to exercise your green thumb, Francesca's Flowers also runs regular workshops.
Kettle and Tin - 215 Given Terrace, Paddington
"Located in the hub of Brisbane’s bar and dining scene, our Paddington Queenslander is a bustling meccah for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and late night drinks."
Need to start the day right or need to wind down after work? Look no further than number 215.
Le Bon Choix - 251 Given Terrace, Paddington
"The sumptuous creations of Le Bon Choix are more than just an indulgence of the palate."
It's like Chanel ... for bakeries. The gorgeous architecture of Le Bon Choix is complemented perfectly by its delicious baked goods. For the record, I highly recommend their caramel donuts.
Blake & Taylor: New & Recycled Furniture Pieces - 11 Latrobe Terrace, Paddington
Hobohemia - 285A Given Terrace, Paddington
“'My Hobohemia is the place to be.' We hope you'll agree ...”
With all these intricate treasures, it would be hard to disagree.

You can't miss this beautiful place. Just keep an eye out for the crocheted everything!
Government House - 168 Fernberg Road, Paddington

The top 5 movies you've never heard of... June 25 2013, 0 Comments
One of my favourite winter activities is curling up in bed or under a big doona on the couch and watching a good film. Get your popcorn, hot chocolate or cup of tea ready because I'm about to list some of my favourite movies - but these films are the ones that don't get the big marketing ticket, they're not reviewed in every magazine or even show at the cinema. But they're lovely...so here we go!
1. Like Crazy
This story is about a real relationship, with real problems. None of this wishy-washy will they won't they, or look I'm kind of in love with your best friend/brother/sister/aunt. They're big obstacle physically keeps them apart, and it's dealt with in a way that's true and not glossed over like other films. Your heart will ache.
Ron Weasley like you've never seen him. Not your usual teen rebellion film, set in Ireland, it's very nitty-gritty like a lot of Irish and British films are. A bit different, but refreshing.
3. The First Time
So this one is a little cliche or corny but I loved it. So cute and plain, a sugary adaptation of what a couples first time would be like. And I just love the male lead Dylan O'Brien - great eye candy.
4. It's Kind of a Funny Story
A 16-year old boy checks himself into a mental institution and makes friends with Zach Galifianakas. A funny and sweet look at how intense and stressful growing up can be. And one of my favourite fashionistas Emma Roberts plays his intriguing love interest. Sigh.
Rose Byrne, Hugh Dancy. Enough said. This film takes a look at Asberges syndrome and how it can affect a person and everyone in their life. Touching, romantic and honest.
Love is in the Air June 25 2013, 0 Comments
In my effort to procrastinate against studying, I came across a little story about a Sydney cafe that just warmed my heart. For the month of June Metro St James cafe overlooking Hyde Park was offering free coffee in exchange for kisses. Now before you jump to conclusions, customers did not have to kiss the staff, but each other. These romantic barristers encouraged expressions of love for free caffeine - and everyone loved it!
People say with the Internet and social media that romance is dying, but I think it's just changing. Take this other video from McFly frontman Tom Fletcher (warning: you will cry whilst watching this). It combined two of my favourite things: romantic gestures and british boy bands. Beautiful, sweet and personal.
Looks like love is in the air ladies, so why not embrace it?
The Amazing Illustrations of: Laura Patterson June 16 2013, 0 Comments
We recently met the lovely Miss Laura Patterson when she popped in to store searching for vintage wonders. Of course we got to talking and discovered Laura's amazing drawing talents and her penchant for creating stunningly detailed & beautiful drawings. She especially loves beetles, bones and architecture but when given the opportunity to draw fashion she jumped at the chance. Soon Laura was back with these beautiful pictures of our " Through the Looking Glass " A/W 2013 Collection. We were pretty impressed to say the least.
I started drawing when I was very little when my mum (a graphic designer) would sit my sister and me down for watercolour lessons when we were just out of nappies. Since these early drawing classes I continued drawing and painting throughout my life. My house has always been filled with art, the smell of someones current oil painting or the mess of an intense sketching session. Ive always been drawn to details and being able to pour over an illustration for hours, filling in the tiny brushstrokes until I'm content.
So what are you working on at the moment?
I am currently completing my masters of architecture and feel that the sensibilities of architectural design have come to influence my artwork. I have a strong affiliation with graphic linework and a love of black.
Is there anything in particular that inspires you?
My current artistic inspirations stem from the beautiful graphic styles of french art nouveau coupled with the intricacy of anatomical drawings and plant life. My most recent series 'On Moths Wings' explores the elegance and stillness of feminine beauty coupled with contradicting darker characters like insects and skeletal elements intertwined to create a balanced and detailed composition.
Is there a secret to creating such unique and beautiful artwork?
I believe that no matter the subject or the themes explored, the end result must be pleasing, beautiful and intriguing for the viewer. I paint what makes me feel happy and content and hope it makes others feel the same.
More of her artwork can be found on her facebook page and available for sale in store - artbylaurapatterson

Vintage Mum Competition Winner : Emilie Bertsch!! May 22 2013, 0 Comments
We loved seeing all the cool ole pics we received for our Vintage Mum Competition, and so heartwarming to read the love y'all have for your fab mums. So big thank you to all the amazing entries.... we love em all!!
Our happy winner Emilie Bertsch was over the moon to hear she won our $100 prize for submitting her beautiful mum's pic. Here's a little insight into Emilie and her mum's vintage style....
What do you remember about your mum's style growing up?
My sister and I used to have this dress-up box with all of these ancient 20’s, 40’s, and 50’s style floor length dresses, handbags and jewelry that mum used to go out in. We would dress up like we were on our way to a ball and we felt regal. I never really saw her in anything that extravagant before because she always worked with children and needed to wear practical clothing, a T-shirt and jeans usually. But mum always had better things hiding in her closet, things that she was saving for a rainy day. Her wedding dress was in her closet building up dust for eight years before she decided to don it. It’s still hanging in her closet to this day, having only been worn once.
How did your mum influence your style?
Mum’s definitely influenced my style, but not in a traditional pass-on-advice way. As I was growing up she vehemently encouraged me to express my individuality through fashion the way I wanted to express it, and experiment, which saw me go through many phases. Even through my anti-fashion phases (like punk and hippie) I was encouraged to dress the way I wanted. She’s the perfect mix of elegance and casualness with a hint of nonconformity, which I think I’ve someone subconsciously adopted.
This is mum (21 years old) at a wedding in all black. All black at a wedding was considered quite risqué at the time. She liked to push the boundaries a bit.
Mum (22 years old) on the left. Really simple, elegant style here, I love it.
This is mum on her 21st Birthday. Note the perm and Barbie-esque style.
This is probably my favourite picture of mum (25 years old) She went to a fetish party in this getup. It’s weird knowing my mum was once a young adult, without wrinkles!
Mum & I at a picnic circa early 1980s.....
Songs for a Rainy Day February 27 2013, 0 Comments
Don't get me wrong, I love a rainy day. It's a perfect time to finish that book you've been reading for the past 6 months, or catch up on recorded TV. But unlike TV, rain that goes on all week long is not as romantic and peaceful as one would like (especially if you have to leave the house). So in order to lift my mood, I've created the perfect playlist for a rainy day - either cuddle up with a magazine, cozy socks and a cup of tea, or plug in your earphones on the way to work and pretend you're going for a romantic reunion with your boyfriend Ryan Gosling. Here are my songs for a rainy day.
1. The Greatest - Cat Power
I found this song whilst watching one of my favourite Zac Efron movies (come on he is beautiful) 17 Again. Melt away with her soulful melodies.
2. Meeting Place - The Last Shadow Puppets
My favourite leading man Alex Turner paired up with his buddy Miles Kane to produce an album that makes me wish I was born in the 60's. Such an adorable song about love and chance. Warning: it will make you want to dance in the rain with the closest man you find.
3. Two Fingers - Jake Bugg
Just discovered this musical prodigy. At only 18 years old, he sounds like this generation's Bob Dylan. Don't let the start of the song fool you, the chorus is easy to get lost in. Perfect addition to the rain hitting your window.
4. Sophia - Laura Marling
Ahh Laura, such a soft, subtle voice. Sounding a little more country, this tune will start slow but build up so that you can power through that rain like the strong woman you are!
5. This Old love - Lior
One of my favourites from high school. I mean just imagining a boy singing "We'll grow old together" is good enough to brighten any day.
6. No Buses, The Bakery or Baby I'm Yours - Arctic Monkey's
Sorry I'm just a huge Arctic Monkey's fan. Although they have a lot of upbeat rock 'n' roll tunes, these boys from Sheffield know how to write a love song when need be. These are just a few of my favourites, and the latter is a cover of a Barbara Lewis song from 1965...ahh such cuties.
7. Noones Gonna Love You or The Funeral - Band of Horses
I discovered Band of Horses through one of my favourite high school dramas One Tree Hill, in which their songs were used countlessly to aid in romantic declarations and kisses in the rain. Their music is a blend of comforting, woodsy, alternative rock; and their entire Cease to Being album alone is perfect for a rainy day.
8. Zebra - Beach House
So, again, Beach House's whole album Teen Dream is perfect for a rainy day - its all mellow, psychedelic dreamy music. Really its perfect for any relaxing weather - hot or cold, sunny or rainy. Just lovely.
9. Poison & Wine - The Civil Wars
Such an emotional song - if you need a good cry (and a rainy day is the perfect time to do it) then this song will do the trick. So tortured, so beautiful.
10. Home - The Foo Fighters
One of the few slower, piano based songs that the amazing mind of Dave Grohl came up with. So calming and simple, a perfect soundtrack to this sad weather.
11. Dream a Little Dream of Me - The Mamas & The Papas
And just because it's one of my favourite oldies, this song is the epitome of romance, a sweet lullaby for the soul.
Blueberry and Coconut Pancakes February 13 2013, 0 Comments
As a child I remember waking up to the smell of Mum’s pancakes on weekends. The sweetness would drift through our home and we would wake with smiles. Twenty years on and the same smell tickles my nose and taste makes me smile.
This Valentine's Day spoil your sweetheart with a batch of these delicious home-made pancakes and watch the smiles and love grow.
2 cups Self Raising Flour
1 cup sugar (you can add more if you or your sweetheart have a real sweet tooth)
1 1/2 cups milk (add less or more milk depending on the consistency you would like)
1 tsp vanilla essence
Butter (for cooking and coating your spatula to flip pancakes)
Step 1: Sift flour in to mixing bowl
Step 2: Add sugar, egg, vanilla and milk. Mix well.
Step 3: In a medium sized frypan place a teaspoon of butter and turn to medium heat, ready to cook your delightful pancakes.
Step 4: Combine fresh blueberries and desiccated coconut into batter. You can add as many blueberries and as much coconut as you like. I added 1 1/2 punnets of blueberries and a generous handful of coconut.
Step 5: Using a large spoon ladle mixture into your pre-heated frypan.
Step 6: Flip pancakes over once the batter has bubbled.
Step 7: Cook for another minute or two then place pancakes on a cooling rack. Your pancakes should be a golden brown colour.
Step 8: Serve up your delicious pancakes with some fresh fruit (I chose strawberries and blueberries), maple syrup and icing sugar. Enjoy, smile and laugh and enjoy Valentine's Day.
